It was exciting to have President Clinton come to Chula Vista to light the torch for the 1996 Olympic Games. Chula Vista loaned a million dollars to the Olympic Training Center to build the women’s softball field. The women went on to win the Gold medal. The City received lots of publicity and good marketing during the president’s visit. Working with the Olympic Training Center was fun and interesting.

Dr. Emerald Randolph and started Christmas in October in 1997 and it’s still going strong 13 years later. We wanted to help low income homeowners repair their houses. We brought businesses together to raise money for supplies and asked community clubs to bring volunteers to do the repair work.

The groundbreaking for SR-125 took place when I was on the City Council. So much controversy surrounded it, but it was very much needed so we took the heat and worked to get it built.

Fire Station #7 was needed to meet the city’s growth. We honored with memorial bricks at the station the New York firefighters who died on 9/11.

One of our Sister Cities is Odawara, Japan. I had a great visit to Odawara and visited with Mayor Tanaka. A bonus was a tour of Tokyo. Riding the trains in Japan was a new experience. The people of Odawara welcomed us to their city.
